Laksa at Downtown Cafe

My lunch buddies, LA and JA, will be upset with me when they read this post because "Laksa Thursday" is becoming a ritual for us and it's not too crowded right now. As JA put it, "Once people read your post, it might get too busy!" We look forward to having a warm bowl of savory laksa, which is the Thursday Special at Downtown Café, located in the Remington College building in Honolulu.

Let me describe Downtown Cafe's version of laksa as a non-expert in Malaysian cuisine. The noodles are half somen and half ramen noodles. There's a hard boiled egg, 3 shrimps, 6 thin slices of fishcake, corn, and green onions, all swimming in a red curry broth. Yes, it is a bit spicy and probably too spicy for my husband, but I'm sure this is the "mild" version that is being served here. For $8, you get a bowl of delicious laksa and an iced tea or iced coffee. The regular price without a drink is $11 so this is a great deal!

The restaurant is small and seating is outside in the courtyard. This place is so "mom and pop" that they don't have a website or Facebook page. They also sell other ramen dishes, gyoza, katsu, etc. and feature daily lunch specials. However, JA will only go to lunch with us on Thursdays to have her favorite laksa lunch. The deal is too good to pass up so I've never tried their other menu items. I recommend giving Downtown Café's Thursday Special a try, especially with cooler weather approaching.
